How to flirt over text so it reads as flirting

The short answer: take one detail from your own conversation with her, turn it into a small joke or a plain compliment, and make it easy to answer in five words or to ignore. Send that one message, then wait. Do not copy a line from a list. We sorted 548 ready-made flirty texts from the pages that rank for this search: 2.6% mention anything specific, and 31.4% assume you are already a couple.

What makes it flirting

Four ingredients that turn a friendly text into a flirty one

A phone propped against a coffee mug on a kitchen counter

This guide is for adults, 18 and over, written mainly for men messaging women. Most advice on how to flirt with a girl over text hands you lines. Lines are the least useful part. A message reads as flirtatious when it does four things at once. Remove one and it reads as merely friendly, or as pushy.

One warning before the four parts. Your message will sound flatter on her screen than it did in your head. In an experiment with 60 Cornell University students, people reading e-mails spotted sarcasm at about 50%, a coin flip, yet believed they had got 89% right. So build the warmth into the words.

Specificity

"You're gorgeous" fits ten thousand women. "You explain films like a lawyer cross-examining them" fits one. Specific means you paid attention. It is also the rarest quality in the lists: 2.6% of the 548 texts we counted point at anything the two people share.

Playfulness

Flirting is a small game with nothing at stake: a mock complaint, a pretend rivalry, a ridiculous bet. Aim the play at the situation or at yourself. Aimed at her looks or choices it becomes negging, which has no place here.

A callback

Return to something she said two days ago. Her doomed basil plant. Her ranking of chips. A callback proves memory, and an inside joke that only the two of you understand is a callback that has been used twice. A nickname works the same way when it grows out of such a joke ("the pigeon theorist"). It is the opposite of a pet name, which could belong to anyone.

An easy out

A flirty text should be simple to answer lightly, or not at all. If she can reply with a laugh and change the subject, the pressure stays off. Most list texts fail here from the other side: only 22.3% of them are a question, so the rest leave her nothing obvious to say back.

Two house rules sit under all four. Keep it short enough to read at a glance. And keep it positive: a complaint about your day, your ex or her reply time is not a tease, however many emoji follow it.

The one-line test

Could she show this message to a friend without either of them wincing? Send it. Otherwise, rewrite.

How to flirt over text without being creepy

Flirty and creepy are separated by invitation. A flirty message offers something and leaves her free. A creepy one takes something she did not offer: a sexual turn, a verdict on her body, a pet name, a claim on her time.

  • Nothing sexual until she has made it mutual. In our count, 9.3% of ready-made texts are sexual. Copying one to a woman you met last week is how a good conversation ends.
  • Compliment what she chose or did. Her joke, her playlist, her nerve. Looks can wait for a stage where you have earned an opinion.
  • No "babe" before she is one. Pet names belong to couples.
  • Cringe is borrowed confidence. A line that sounds like someone else wrote it usually was written by someone else.

Lists of "flirty texts for her" rank at the top of Google, so we collected every example message from 8 of those pages and sorted all 548 of them.

Almost a third, 31.4%, only make sense if you are already together: they say "babe", "come home" or "last night". Sent to someone you have known for a week, they read as presumptuous.

Just 2.6% refer to anything specific: a thing she said, a place, a shared joke. Yet the specific message is the one that cannot be copied from a list, which is exactly why it lands. And only 22.3% are a question, so most of these texts give her nothing to reply to.

How we got these numbers

Pages taken from the top 20 Google results in the United States for "flirty texts for her" and "flirty texts" (Ahrefs, 10 October 2026). From each page we extracted list items and quoted lines between 12 and 180 characters that end like a sentence, removed duplicates, and tested each message against fixed word patterns. Extraction from other sites' pages is imperfect: a small number of non-message lines will have slipped in, and the categories overlap. Treat the percentages as approximate.

Examples by stage

Flirty texts for her, grouped by where you two stand

A phone lying on a sofa cushion beside a folded blanket in lamp light

A list sorted by mood ("cute", "bold") hides the thing that decides whether a text is welcome: how well she knows you. That is why 31.4% of list texts misfire on anyone who is not yet your girlfriend. So these are sorted by stage. The best flirty texts are molds, so send none as written. Swap in her detail. Each comes with the reason it works.

If you came looking for how to flirt over text examples you can paste, read the reason in italics first. The reason transfers to your conversation. The pineapple pizza does not.

Just met: one conversation and her number

Usually sent: "Hey, it's Tom from last night ;)". It gives her nothing to answer. Good flirty first text message to a girl examples borrow from the talk you already had. The mechanics of that message are in the first text after you get her number and in what to write in the week she gave you her number.

  • "It's Tom, the man who lost the pineapple pizza argument. I'd like a retrial." Callback plus a mock grievance.
  • "I looked up that band. You were right, and I resent it." Proves you listened.
  • "Urgent question from earlier: window seat or aisle? A lot rides on this." Tiny stakes, five-word answer.
  • "You left before the goat story ended. Unacceptable cliffhanger." Fake outrage signals play.
  • "Your directions to the taco van were wrong by two streets. Worth it, though." Shows you acted on her tip; the tease lands on the directions.

Someone you have never met in person

Usually sent: "Hey gorgeous" to a face known from four photos. How to flirt over text with someone you've never met: lighter and slower, because your only shared history is the chat itself. So flirt with the chat. For the very first line on an app, see opening lines built on what her photos show.

  • "Your profile claims you'd win any argument about bread. I make a decent focaccia and I'm prepared to be judged." Picks something she chose to write and makes her the expert.
  • "Three days of messages and I still can't tell if you're a morning person. The 7am reply suggests yes. Alarming." Notices a pattern in the thread, which is the one thing you share.
  • "You type 'anyway' the way other people slam a door. I enjoy it." Compliments how she writes, not how she looks.
  • "I have a theory that you're funnier by text than most people are in person. I'd like to test it over coffee sometime." Praise for her wit, plus a door towards meeting that she can leave shut.

A crush you already know

Usually sent: nothing for three weeks, then a paragraph confessing everything. With a crush from a class, a club or a circle of friends, small and regular beats large and sudden. If she is a close friend, read texting a friend you are starting to like first, because there is more to lose.

  • "You carried that whole quiz team last night. I contributed one wrong answer about Belgium and my presence." Admires a skill, mocks himself.
  • "Saving you a seat on Thursday. This is not generosity. You're the only one who laughs at my jokes." A small favor with a joke for an excuse.
  • "Saw a bike exactly like yours outside the library and was briefly, embarrassingly pleased." Admits a flicker of interest and asks for nothing.
  • "You've mentioned the climbing wall twice now. Either take me along or stop advertising." An invitation she can accept or laugh off.

Talking for a week

Usually sent: "So what are you up to?" for the seventh day running. Friendly, never flirty. These lean towards cute flirty texts: warm and slightly silly.

  • "Walked past a bakery and thought of you. Unfair. Now I want a cinnamon bun and your company." "I thought of you", cushioned.
  • "My day got 40% better when your name appeared. I checked the math." Direct interest, self-mocking.
  • "You're trouble. The good kind, like a second dessert." The tease contains the compliment.
  • "I suspect you're funnier than me. I don't love it." Praises her wit, not her looks.
  • "You've ruined ordinary texts for me. Someone sent 'ok' today and I felt nothing." Tells her that her messages stand out, by way of a complaint.

Before a first date

Usually sent: "Looking forward to it ;)", or silence until the day. The days before a date are for building anticipation about the evening, not about her body. Still deciding whether to ask? See how soon to suggest meeting.

  • "Fair warning: I've read the menu already and have strong opinions about the dumplings." Anticipation attached to the plan.
  • "Thursday forecast: rain. I own one umbrella and am willing to share it, within reason." Confirms the date and adds a picture of the two of you.
  • "The place runs a quiz on Thursdays. If we end up on a team, I'm relying on you for anything after 1990." Gives her a role in something that has not happened yet.
  • "Still on for Saturday at seven? I'm asking mostly so I can keep looking forward to it." A confirmation with a plain admission inside.

After a good date

Usually sent: "Had fun!" Polite, empty. For flirty texts to make her blush, sincerity beats anything suggestive. When to send it is covered in the message for the morning after a first date.

  • "Home. Still laughing about the waiter and the candle. You're very good company." Specific memory, plain compliment.
  • "I'd planned to play it cool for a day. That lasted until the bus stop." Honest, asks for nothing.
  • "For the record, your laugh was the best thing I heard all week." Impossible to send to anyone else.
  • "I demand a pool rematch. I was distracted. By you, obviously." Blames her charm for his defeat.
  • "You were right about the lemon tart. I'd like to be wrong again next week." A concession that doubles as a request for a second date.

Flirty texts to ask her out

Usually sent: "We should hang out sometime." No day, no place, nothing to say yes to. Flirting that never arrives at a plan becomes a pen-pal arrangement. Name a day and a thing.

  • "That bakery on Mill Road claims the best cinnamon bun in town. I need a second judge. Saturday morning?" Callback, a named day, a yes-or-no answer.
  • "You've mentioned the noodle place three times. I think the only cure is going. Thursday?" Her own enthusiasm becomes the invitation.
  • "I owe you a pool rematch and a drink for the humiliation. Free on Friday?" The date grows out of a joke you already share.
  • "I'd like to take you to dinner. That's the whole text. Wednesday or Sunday?" Clarity is attractive; two options make it easy.

"I can't Thursday, how about Sunday?" is a yes. "I'm pretty busy" with no other day is a no for now. Ask once more at most, some weeks later.

Long distance

Usually sent: "Miss you" every day, until it means nothing. Across a distance, the detail has to come from her day or from a plan, because there is no shared evening to quote. The morning side of this is in good-morning messages for a long-distance relationship.

  • "It's eleven at night here and four in the afternoon there, so you're having the day I've already finished. Spoiler: dinner is the good part." Turns the time difference into a private joke.
  • "Made your pasta tonight. It was 60% as good. The missing 40% is clearly you." "I miss you", with evidence.
  • "Booked the 14th. Start a list of things I'm not allowed to leave without eating." A date on the calendar, and a job for her.
  • "Watched a couple argue over a map today and missed arguing with you about maps." Misses one particular thing about her.

Your girlfriend or wife

Usually sent: "Can you get milk?" Logistics eat flirting alive. Yet in a Pew survey of 2,252 American adults, interviewed in 2013, 21% of cell owners or internet users in a committed relationship had felt closer to their partner because of exchanges online or by text. This is the one stage where the ready-made lists fit, since so many of them are written for couples. Pet names and "come home" are fine here. The detail still does the work.

  • "Saw you across the kitchen on that work call. Still got it." She is still noticed.
  • "Reminder that I'd pick you again. Also, we need milk." Sincerity first, joke second.
  • "Home at six. I'm cooking and you're being admired." A plan and a compliment.
  • "Eleven years in and your voicemail greeting still makes me smile." Small and true beats grand.
  • "Watched you parallel park from the window. Very attractive. Whoever taught you, I owe them a drink." Admires competence, which long-term couples stop mentioning.
  • "Leaving work now. The first twenty minutes at home are yours, phone in the other room." Attention is the gift.

These are smooth flirty texts for someone who already said yes. Flirty morning texts for her have their own page, good morning texts for her, with a section on romantic mornings once you are a couple.

How the texts join up: one exchange, six messages

Single lines are easy to admire and hard to place. Here is an invented exchange from the "talking for a week" stage, with what each of his messages is doing.

MessageWhat it does
Him: "Update: the basil is dead. I followed your instructions exactly, which raises questions about your instructions."Callback and mock accusation. No greeting needed.
Her: "You drowned it. I can tell from here."She teases back, so the game is on.
Him: "Slander. Though I admit I like being told off by you."One notch warmer, and only after her tease.
Her: "Noted. What are you doing with the empty pot?"She accepts the compliment lightly and keeps the thread alive with a question.
Him: "Mourning. Then replacing it on Saturday at the garden center with the good café. You should supervise."The joke turns into a plan with a day and a place.
Her: "Someone has to. 11?" Him: "11. Going now before I say something that ruins it."He closes while it is going well and does not chase one more laugh.

Note the proportions: three short messages from him, none longer than two sentences, and the flirtation rises only when she has answered in kind.

Flirty texts to send for a smile, a blush or a better day

A bicycle leaning on a railing beside a canal at dusk

Sometimes the stage is settled and the question is what the message should do. Pick the job first. Then find the detail.

To make her smile

A smile needs no cleverness. It needs proof that something in your day pointed at her.

  • "The café has renamed your order 'the complicated one'. I said nothing in your defense." Affectionate teasing about a habit you have watched.
  • "No news. I just saw a man carry a ladder through a revolving door and wanted you there for it." "I wish you had seen this" means "I like your company".
  • "Your voice note about the printer made a dull afternoon a lot shorter." Thanks her for something she did, in detail.

To make her blush

Suggestive lines produce an eye-roll. A blush comes from being seen accurately.

  • "I keep telling people how you argued with the parking machine. Affectionately. Repeatedly." She learns she is being talked about, kindly.
  • "You listen in a way that makes people say more than they planned. I noticed because I did." A compliment on a trait, backed by an example.
  • "I've rewritten this three times, so plainly: I like you, and I'm glad you sat down at our table." Admits the effort, then says it straight.

To cheer her up after a bad day

Flirting takes the back seat here. Be on her side first; the warmth is the flirtation.

  • "No jokes tonight unless you ask for one. I'm on your side against the whole spreadsheet." Offers support and lets her set the mood.
  • "Bad day protocol: you rant, I listen, and at the end I rank everyone who wronged you." Play offered as a service.
  • "No need to answer this. I think you're excellent, and today hasn't changed that." Removes the duty to reply.

Flirty questions she can answer in a line

A question hands her the next move. Most ready-made texts are statements: 22.3% of the ones we sorted ask anything. Keep yours small, and answer it yourself so it is a trade.

  • "Important: what's your most unreasonable food opinion? Mine involves raisins." Low stakes, and he goes first.
  • "If I planned a Saturday around you, what's the one thing it would have to include?" Lets her describe a date without anyone calling it one.
  • "What's a small thing you're weirdly competitive about? I need to know what I'm up against." Sets up a future rivalry.
  • "Scale of one to ten, how much were you showing off with that crossword?" A tease she answers with a number and a defense.
  • "What would you have said if I'd asked for your number ten minutes earlier?" Replays how you met, with her writing the ending.
  • "Hypothetically: we're stuck in an airport for nine hours. Are you the one finding the good coffee or the one asleep on the bags?" A playful hypothetical puts the two of you in one scene.
  • "If we opened a café, what would we argue about first: the music or the name?" "We" without a declaration, and an argument to have for fun.

In the middle of her working day

She is busy and may be reading with a colleague at her shoulder. Short, clean, no reply needed. Late-night messages are a different matter: see time of day and reply gaps.

  • "Meeting four of six. Thinking about your theory that every meeting is an email wearing a hat." A callback that takes five seconds to read.
  • "Lunch report: tried the sandwich you recommended. You have taste, which ruins my plan to disagree with you." Shows he followed her advice.
  • "Reply when you're free. Just: good luck at two o'clock. You'll be the sharpest person in that room." Remembers her schedule and expects nothing back.

One detail, ten tones: cute, sweet, cheeky, witty, sassy, bold

People search for the tone: sweet, cheeky, clever, sassy flirty texts. Tone is the easy part. Below, one invented detail (she beat you at mini-golf) is written ten ways. Hold your own detail steady and change the voice to suit her.

ToneThe same detail in that voiceFits when
Cute"I lost at mini-golf and still went home happy. Suspicious."Early days; you want warm and harmless
Sweet"Mini-golf was fun. Watching you celebrate on the ninth hole was better."She has been openly warm with you
Cheeky"You only won because I was busy watching you line up the shot."She teases you first and often
Witty or clever"I've reviewed the footage. The windmill was clearly on your side."She likes a running joke
Sassy"Enjoy the title, champ. It expires the second we play pool."You already trade insults for fun
Bold"I want a rematch, and I want it to be a date. Friday?"Interest has shown on both sides
Cheesy"You got a hole in one and, annoyingly, my full attention."She enjoys a groan; send it knowing it is cheesy
Casual or innocent"Good game yesterday. You're dangerous with a putter."Shared friends, shared office, or you are unsure
Simple"Yesterday was fun. Again soon?"She writes short messages herself
Deep or romantic"Around the sixth hole I stopped caring about the score. I just liked being there with you."You are together, or about to be

Two tones are missing on purpose. "Extremely flirty" in the lists means sexual, and "dark" needs a shared sense of humor that takes months to confirm. Short is fine, though. The median list text runs to 69 characters, and nothing above needs many more.

Texts about her eyes, her smile, her looks

In our count, 10.4% of ready-made texts are about her looks or body. Early on, such a line tells her what every other man has told her. Later, one sincere and exact line is welcome: "That green sweater on Saturday. I lost my place in the sentence." Her smile and her eyes are safer ground than her figure, and "you looked happy" is safer than both.

A small round bar table with two empty glasses under a hanging lamp
Humor

Flirty texts to make her laugh, and why humor carries weight

A small cinema entrance with a lit marquee and wet pavement

At the University of Kansas, 51 pairs of single, heterosexual college students who had never met talked alone for about ten minutes. The more often the man tried to be funny and the more she laughed, the more interested she was. When they laughed together, both were more interested. That was in person. Aim for shared laughter, not a performance.

Funny flirty texts tease the situation, never her

  • "Your dog has ranked me third. I'm coming for second." A rivalry she can referee.
  • "Your playlist has Abba and death metal. I have questions and some fear." Notices a real quirk.
  • "Bold of you to recommend a three-hour film. I'm invoicing you for my evening." Mock complaint, zero sting.
  • "I told my sister your joke about the ferry. She laughed and I took the credit. We should discuss royalties." Her humor is the subject, and he is the villain.
  • "Your phone changed 'see you soon' to 'see you spoon'. I've adopted it as our official sign-off." Turns an accident into something only you two say.

A joke as the very first message is a separate bet, weighed up under when a funny opener helps on an app.

Flirty games to play over text

A game gives both of you permission to be silly. Three that work in writing:

  • Two truths and a lie. You learn two real things and get one thing to tease her about.
  • This or that. Five quick rounds: mountains or sea, cook or be cooked for. Disagree loudly on one.
  • The standing bet. A prediction about something trivial, where the loser buys the coffee. It ends in a plan.

Truth or dare is the one the lists love. Over text the dares drift towards the sexual within a few turns, so leave it for a couple. Stop any game while it is still fun.

Savage replies to flirty texts she sends you

The best savage replies to flirty texts are quick, not cruel. Accept the hit and raise it.

  • She: "You're kind of a nerd." You: "Kind of? I've been putting in real effort." Agrees and exaggerates.
  • She: "Did you miss me?" You: "I had a rota. You got Tuesday and most of Wednesday." A yes, hidden in paperwork.
  • She: "You're not as funny as you think." You: "Devastating. And yet you keep texting." Takes the hit, points at the evidence.
  • She: "You took four hours to reply." You: "I was drafting. You deserve an edited man." Turns the complaint into a compliment.

Would it hurt on a bad day? Delete it.

You type a line with a grin. She reads it on a bus, in whatever voice her day supplies. The grin does not travel.

What the e-mail experiments found

In 2005 Justin Kruger, Nicholas Epley and colleagues published five experiments on tone in written messages. In one, 60 Cornell University students exchanged sarcastic and serious statements. By voice, nearly three-quarters were decoded correctly. On a screen, accuracy was indistinguishable from chance, yet those readers believed they had got 89% right.

In another, across e-mail, voice and face-to-face, 154 pairs of University of Illinois students predicted that 88.8% of their intended tones would land; 70.4% did. Friends were as overconfident as strangers. These were students writing e-mail, not daters texting. Still, the mechanism is yours: you hear your own tone and assume she does.

Three ways to compensate

  • Label the joke. Put the wink into words: "obviously I'm joking".
  • Hold the sarcasm. Save it until she knows your voice.
  • Read it flat. Say the text aloud in a bored monotone. Rude or needy? Change it.

Voice notes: borrow your own voice

In that Cornell experiment statements were understood far better when heard than when read. A fifteen-second voice note is the cheap way to use this: your laugh is in it. That is our inference from an e-mail study, not a finding about dating. Send one when a joke depends on delivery, keep it under half a minute, and only once she has sent one herself or said she likes them.

Photos: send the thing you saw

A photo of the dog in the raincoat, the misspelled shop sign, or the dish you cooked from her recipe is a callback with no words to misread. A GIF or a meme can do it too, if it refers to something the two of you said; a random one is the picture version of "hey". Skip the gym-mirror selfie that fishes for praise. Never send anything intimate that she has not asked for.

When a text cannot carry it

An apology or a serious question needs a call. Flirting in the same room has its own rules, and its own signals such as eye contact and distance: see how to flirt with a girl in person.

"You up?" Late, low effort, an agenda "Saw a dog in a raincoat and remembered your rant about tiny coats."
"I bet you say that to all the guys" Suspicion dressed as a joke "Careful. I'm easily flattered and I will bring this up again."

"You'd look even better if you smiled more" A criticism with a ribbon on it "That hike photo: you look like you just won an argument with a mountain."
"Sooo... what are you wearing?" Sexual, uninvited, too early "Tonight's plan: sofa, or pretending to be someone who goes out?"
"Morning babe" in the first week A pet name she never agreed to, and a routine she did not sign up for "Did the basil survive the night?" Whether a daily greeting is welcome yet is settled in the daily good-morning rule.

The pattern in the right-hand column

Each replacement names something only she said or did, or states the intention outright, and can be answered in five words. None asks her to reassure you.

The small signals

Emoji, punctuation, timing and the app you are in

A basil plant on a sunny windowsill

Emoji do the job your face would

Gesselman, Ta and Garcia surveyed 5,327 single American adults aged 18 to 94. Only 28.2% regularly used emoji with potential dates; 37.6% never did. The top reason for using them, given by 53%, was that they give text messages more personality. Frequent users reported more first dates; a second sample did not.

That is a correlation, measured from the sender's side only. Our reading: one emoji that marks a tease as a tease does honest work. Five in a row is noise. Hearts and kiss emoji follow her lead; send the first one after she has.

Punctuation is tone of voice

"Fine." with a period reads cold. One exclamation mark reads warm; three read anxious. Choose them on purpose.

Pace: match her, do not mirror her

Send one message. Wait. A second text that exists to prompt an answer to the first turns silence into pressure, and she has enough of that: in a 2022 Pew Research Center survey of 6,034 U.S. adults, 54% of women who had recently used dating apps felt overwhelmed by the number of messages they received. Match her length and her rough speed without counting minutes. The wider rhythm, including how often to text at each stage, is in our main guide on how to text a woman.

When to flirt over text, and when to hold it

Flirt when the conversation is already moving and she is answering with more than a word. Afternoon and early evening suit most people. After midnight, the same sentence acquires an agenda. Hold it altogether when she is upset, in a crisis at work, or has just told you something hard. And if every flirty line for a week has been met with a change of subject, that is information.

Dating app, Instagram, WhatsApp, plain SMS

  • Inside a dating app. You are one of many threads, so be short and point at her profile. On Hinge the prompt gives you the detail: see answering a Hinge prompt.
  • Instagram. A reply to her story is a ready-made callback, because she chose to post it. One reply. Not every story.
  • WhatsApp or iMessage. She gave you her number, which is some trust. "Seen" is not a debt, and two blue ticks are no reason for a second message.
  • Plain SMS. Words carry everything, so label the joke.

People search for how to flirt via text, how to flirt in text and how to flirt through text as if the channel changed the skill. It does not. A flirty conversation with her moves the same way everywhere: one line from you, room for one from her.

Finish while it is still good

End the exchange yourself now and then, at a high point: "I have to go and be an adult. Hold that thought about the ferry." A thread that stops on a laugh is easy to reopen tomorrow. One that is squeezed until both of you send "haha" is not. Our main guide has more on closing a thread without killing it.

The useful signs of flirting from a girl over text are things she does: starting threads, reviving your jokes, sending something for no reason, asking a question when a period would have done. Our reading, not a finding: she may match you, in length and by answering a story with her own. Reading interest in depth is another subject.

Judge the week, not the message. One slow reply or one missing emoji tells you nothing, and analyzing every line with three friends is how a relaxed man turns into a tense one.

You are probably liked more than you think

After real conversations, people systematically underestimated how much their conversation partners liked them. Boothby and colleagues saw this in person among lab strangers, dorm mates and workshop attendees. Liking, not attraction. Encouragement, not proof.

Signs you are coming on too strong

  • Her replies get shorter each time you get warmer.
  • She answers the practical half of a message and skips the flirty half.
  • She mentions a partner, or how busy she is, soon after a compliment.

Drop to friendly for a few days. If the warmth returns, it returns from her side.

If a flirty text lands badly

You sent a tease and got "wow, ok". Do not explain the joke in three paragraphs. One line: "That read worse than it sounded in my head. Sorry." Then return to an ordinary subject. A single clean apology repairs most misfires; a long one makes her manage your feelings.

If she does not answer at all

Silence after a flirty message is common and usually means a full day, not a verdict. Leave it. A second attempt belongs days later and on a new subject. Our main guide sets out when to stop texting her, and the starters page covers texting again after a long silence.

When the answer is no

Stop. Among women under 50 who had used dating sites or apps, 43% told Pew that someone kept contacting them after they said they were not interested, and 56% had been sent a sexually explicit message or image they did not ask for. One gracious line, then nothing. The in-person version is stepping back without a scene.

Ways to subtly flirt over text when you are unsure

A projector beam across a dark living room with a sofa

Shared friends, a shared office, or no meeting in person yet? Turn the volume down. These ways to flirt with a girl over text pass as friendliness if she is not interested, which is the point: nobody has to refuse anything.

01

Notice, then mention

Subtle flirty texts begin with noticing. "You always find the one good table" shows attention without a declaration.

02

Send the thing, not the feeling

A photo of the strange shop sign. The song. "This is extremely you" is flirtation in four words.

03

Say "we" about something small

"We should settle the dumpling question properly some time." A tiny shared future, with no date attached, that she can pick up or leave.

04

Remember out loud

"How did the driving test go? Thursday, wasn't it?" Remembering her calendar is quieter than a compliment and often lands harder.

05

A colleague or a friend of friends

Write nothing you would mind being read out at work. One light signal, one clear and easy invitation, and one answer accepted. She has to see you on Monday either way.

06

Too subtle is its own mistake

If only 36% of men and 18% of women spot flirting in the same room, a hint on a screen can vanish entirely. After two weeks of hints, send one plain sentence: "I'd like to take you for a drink."

In person, quiet signals have a ceiling too: see where subtle flirting stops working face to face. If the thread itself is fading, the fix is under keeping a text conversation going. How we check advice is on the about page.

Questions

Flirting by text: short answers

How do you flirt over text without being awkward?

Write one message that is specific to her, playful about the situation, and easy to answer lightly. Read it aloud in a flat voice. If it still sounds kind, send it and wait.

What are good flirty texts to send her?

The good ones cannot be copied, because they point at something she said or did. Of 548 ready-made texts we sorted from top-ranking lists, 2.6% did that. A reliable shape is a callback plus a tease: 'I looked up that band. You were right, and I resent it.'

How to flirt over text with a girl you have only just met?

Mention one thing she said, add a small joke, ask something that takes five words to answer. Skip pet names, comments on her body and anything late at night.

Can you really flirt over text, and is it a bad idea?

You can, and it is not bad. It is limited. Text is good for keeping warmth going between meetings and poor at carrying tone, so use it for short playful messages and plans, and save anything serious for a call or for the next time you see her.

Should I use emoji when I flirt by text?

One, where it marks a joke as a joke. In a survey of 5,327 single American adults, 28.2% regularly used emoji with dates. Frequent users reported more first dates, but a second sample did not. That is a correlation, not a cause. Match her habits.

How can I tell if she is flirting back over text?

Look for her adding to the game: teasing back, reviving your joke a day later, starting threads herself. Stay modest: in a University of Kansas study of 52 pairs of students talking face to face, only 36% of men noticed flirting when it was happening.

What should I do if she does not reply to a flirty text?

Nothing, for now. Do not explain the joke, apologize for it, or send a question mark. After some days, one ordinary message on another subject is fine. If that goes unanswered too, silence is her answer.

Which flirty texts will make her want me or obsess over me?

None. No sentence produces wanting in a person who does not feel it, and pages that promise this are selling a script. What a text can do is show attention, humor and clear interest. If she likes you, that is enough. If she does not, nothing you type should try to change her mind.

Should I compliment her eyes, her smile or her looks by text?

Later, and once. In our count of 548 ready-made flirty texts, 10.4% are about her looks or body, so early on such a line sounds like everyone else. Start with things she chose or did. When you do mention her looks, tie it to a moment: 'That green sweater on Saturday. I lost my place in the sentence.'

How do I flirt over text with my girlfriend or wife?

Interrupt the logistics. Send one message a day that is not about shopping, children or schedules: something you noticed about her, a memory, a plan for the evening. Pet names are fine now. The detail still matters more than the endearment.

How to flirt with an older woman over text?

The same way as with anyone: specific, playful, easy to answer. Do not mention the age gap, do not perform maturity, and do not use slang you would not normally use. Be direct about wanting to meet. Vague flirting wastes the time of someone who knows what she wants.

Are there flirty texts that will get her back?

If she ended it or said no, there are none, and you should not look for them. If the conversation simply faded with no refusal, one friendly message about something specific is reasonable. Flirt again only after she answers warmly.

I am shy and bad at this. Where do I start?

Start with noticing instead of joking. 'I tried the place you mentioned, you were right' is flirting at its lowest setting and needs no wit. Text helps shy people because you can draft, wait ten minutes and edit. Just do not draft for an hour. Send it at good enough.

How to flirt over text as an autistic person?

Lean on what text is good at: time to think, and words in place of facial signals. Say the interest plainly ('I like talking to you and I would like to take you out') where others would hint. If you cannot tell whether she is joking, ask. A direct question is not a failure of flirting; many people find it a relief.

Do pickup lines work over text?

Rarely on their own. A pickup line is the least specific message there is, and she has probably seen it before. If you enjoy a cheesy one, send it as a joke you both know is a joke, to someone already teasing you, and follow it with something real about her.

Should I let AI write my flirty texts?

It can tidy a sentence. It cannot know what she said on Tuesday, and that detail is the whole message. A generated line reads like the lists: smooth, general, addressed to nobody. Write the detail yourself.

Do these principles only work for men texting women?

No. This site is written for men messaging women, so the examples are framed that way. Specificity, play, a callback and an easy out work between any two adults. If you searched how to flirt girl to girl over text, everything here applies unchanged; only the pronouns in the examples differ.
