Flirting in person

How to flirt with a girl in person, with an easy way out built in

The short answer on how to flirt: catch her eye, smile, and say one friendly thing about the moment you share. Keep it small enough that she can ignore it at no cost. If she adds something, stay, and later say plainly that you have enjoyed talking. If she adds nothing, wish her well and go. Reading is the hard half: in a University of Kansas study of 52 pairs of students, only 36% of men noticed when their partner was flirting, and only 7 of the 11 top-ranking guides we checked say what to do when she is not interested.

Definition first

Flirting is a question, not a performance

Two bar stools at an empty wooden counter with two glasses of water

This page is for adults, 18 and over. The search phrase says "girl"; we mean an adult woman throughout. Flirting is a low-stakes signal of interest that the other person can accept, ignore or decline at no cost to herself.

The vagueness is deliberate. Jeffrey Hall, who ran that Kansas study, said people avoid obvious flirting "because they don't want to be embarrassed", and that "flirting looks a lot like being friendly". The blur protects you both. She can let it pass. You can step back. That is the job flirting does when you like someone: it lets two people find out whether interest is shared before either has to say so outright.

If starting is the part you dread, you have company. In a Pew Research Center survey of 4,860 US adults, 46% of daters who had found it hard to find people to date named difficulty approaching people as a major reason.

Three tests for any flirtatious move

  • Small. It takes seconds and asks for nothing.
  • Clear enough. A friend watching would call it warm, not odd.
  • Declinable. She can ignore it and nothing awkward follows.

Flirting or just friendly?

From outside the two look alike; Hall says so in as many words. The difference is direction. Friendliness is spread evenly: she is just as warm with the person next to you. Flirting is aimed. Her attention keeps coming back to one person, and each time something is added: a question, a tease, a reason to stay. One warm moment tells you nothing. A run of them might.

What it is not

It is not a method for changing someone's mind. If you searched for how to flirt with women using lines that "work", there are none. Scripts, put-downs dressed as jokes and trying again after a no all fail the third test.

Keep the base rate in mind

"Most people on most days are not flirting with everyone they come in contact with," Hall said. Friendliness is the default. Treat it as friendliness until she adds something more.

How we pick and check studies is on our about page.

The act, in order

A small round cafe table with two coffee cups beside a window
Step 1 · The setting

First check the room: can she walk away?

A bookshop table stacked with paperbacks in soft light

The same sentence is charming at a party and a problem at a till. What changes is whether she is free to leave. Guides do raise the topic: 9 of the 11 in our count mention work or service settings. Our rule is blunter than most of them. Some settings rule flirting out.

At a bar or a party

Hall advises staying open to flirting "in settings where flirting is common, such as at a party or bar". Those settings give her an easy exit: friends nearby, somewhere else to stand. Speak when she is between things, at the counter or in a queue, not mid-conversation. If her friends are there, include them. A drink sent over unasked creates a debt, so ask first or skip it. And nothing changes with numbers. How to flirt with girls in a group is the same as with one woman: pick one conversation and be present in it.

A class, club or hobby group

You will see her again next week, which cuts both ways. There is no rush, so one light signal per meeting is plenty. But a clumsy move follows you both back into the room, and she cannot avoid you without giving up the class.

At the gym

Mid-workout, the gym is close to a no-exit setting. Headphones in or a set under way means do not interrupt. If you train at the same hours and she is the one who nods or says hello, keep it to a sentence by the water fountain or on the way out, and leave it there for the day. Never comment on her body. Never correct her form.

At work, with a coworker

The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says the law does not prohibit "simple teasing, offhand comments, or isolated incidents that are not very serious", but unwelcome sexual advances become illegal harassment when frequent or severe enough to create a hostile work environment. In practice: never with anyone you manage, one private invitation at most, no repeats. If the search was how to flirt at work "professionally", there is no such thing. The professional version is being equally warm to everyone.

At her job: bartenders, baristas, shop staff, your doctor

Warmth is part of the job, and she cannot walk away from a customer. That fails the declinable test. Someone treating you, a doctor, nurse or therapist, is further out again: keep that relationship as it is.

A stranger in public

A lift. A train seat. A quiet street at night. If she cannot easily end the conversation, do not start one. In a busy daytime place, one remark is fine. If she does not slow down, neither do you.

Apps and messages are separate skills with their own pages. If your question is how to flirt on Hinge, start with answering a Hinge prompt; for how to flirt on dating apps in general, see opening lines built from her profile.

Body language and eye contact: what researchers recorded

An empty dance studio corner with a barre and a large mirror

Anyone asking how to flirt with a woman non-verbally is hoping for a code. Two filmed studies and one tradition of field observation offer something more modest, and more useful.

Look for her glance first

Monica Moore's observational work is the classic. We could not open her 1985 paper, so we rely on the account in a 2021 paper in Human Ethology. Moore catalogued women's nonverbal signals and found that some, such as eye contact followed by an immediate look away, "directly or indirectly resulted in the approach and/or maintained attention of a man". In a follow-up, an observer watching those signals could predict with 90% accuracy whether an approach would follow.

So an approach often answers an invitation. Wait for the glance.

How to flirt with eye contact

Hold it for a second or two, smile, look away. Past that point it stops being a signal and becomes a demand. Eye contact is one of the two moves guides agree on most, named by 10 of the 11 in our count. Moore's finding is the reason it deserves that place, and also the reason to look for hers before sending yours.

What reads as flirtatious in a man's posture

The same 2021 paper showed 121 students at a private US university drawings of men in different poses. Open limb positions, palm-up gestures, taking up space and a tilted head were picked as more flirtatious. So was touching the other man in the drawing, not a woman; see distance and touch. Caveat: drawings judged by students, not live conversations.

Five styles, five different looks

In a second Kansas study, Hall and Chong Xing filmed 51 pairs of opposite-sex heterosexual strangers talking for 10 to 12 minutes. The team coded 36 verbal behaviors, such as compliments, questions and revealing information, alongside nonverbal ones such as leaning forward and nodding. Attraction looked different depending on each person's flirting style.

Style (Hall)How attraction showed in the labWhy it gets missed
SincereAttentive, less fidgetyLooks like good listening
Traditional (men)Leaning in, open body postureEasy to overdo into crowding
PoliteLeaning back, more space, an even toneHall: "it signals a lack of closeness"
PhysicalFewer compliments when attractedLess at ease one to one
PlayfulNamed, but no behaviors listed in the releaseWe add nothing the source does not say

The release sums it up: "most people are pretty subtle", and everybody does it differently.

Mirroring and leaning in

Popular guides tell you to mirror her posture and lean in. Leaning in did appear in Hall's lab, among men with the traditional style. No source we opened reports on mirroring, so we give no instruction on it. Notice it if it happens. Do not stage it.

Voice and tone

Advice about pitch, whispering or a "flirty voice" is everywhere, and no source we opened reports on it. The one finding on tone points the other way: Hall's polite flirts grew more even in tone as they grew more attracted. Use your normal voice, a little slower. Leaning in to murmur breaks the distance rule further down.

Step 3 · Opening and talking

Seven in-person moves, in the order they happen

Buckets of tulips at a farmers market flower stall in morning light

Search for ways to flirt with a girl and you get lists of fifty. Seven cover it, and they come in a sequence. Each passes the three tests. The wording is ours, not a study's.

1. Eye contact, then a smile

A second or two, then look away. If she looks back, that is your opening. If she does not, nothing was asked and nothing is owed.

2. A remark about the shared moment

The queue, the band, the host's playlist. Easy to answer, easy to ignore. This is most of how to casually flirt: a sentence that would be normal to say to anyone, said to her.

3. Real curiosity

Ask about what she just said, then listen. A follow-up question shows attention better than a clever line does, and attention is rarer than wit. Offer something of your own in return, and say so when you find a thing in common. Questions alone turn into an interview.

4. Playful humor: laugh with her, do not perform at her

In a third Kansas study, 51 pairs of single, heterosexual college students who did not know each other talked for about 10 minutes. The more times a man tried to be funny and the more times the woman laughed, the more likely she was to be romantically interested. When the pair laughed together, they were more interested in each other. Humor is mentioned by 9 of the 11 guides in our count. The study suggests what to aim for: not a routine, but the thing you both find funny. Her laugh is information. So is its absence.

5. Teasing and banter, with you as half the joke

Banter is a light back-and-forth where each line builds on the last. Tease choices, never traits: her loyalty to a terrible football team, not her looks, age or job. If it would sting said flatly, drop it.

An illustration, invented for this page. You: "Pineapple. On purpose." She: "It's the correct choice." You: "I respect the confidence. I'll be over here with the boring half." Only 6 of the 11 guides we counted mention teasing at all, and it is the move most easily confused with negging.

6. A specific, non-physical compliment

Praise a choice she made: the book, the jacket, the argument she just won. Say it once. Do not wait for thanks.

7. Saying it plainly

When the signs are warm, a calm, direct sentence is the easiest thing to answer honestly: "I've enjoyed this. Would you like to get a coffee sometime?" Direct and respectful are not opposites. She knows exactly what she is answering.

Our own count

What the top 11 flirting guides leave out

We opened the pages Google ranks highest for "how to flirt" and "how to flirt with a girl" and checked, one topic at a time, what each of them covers. 11 guides were readable advice pages; the rest were videos and forum threads.

Technique is covered almost everywhere: 10 of 11 guides mention eye contact and 10 mention compliments. The exit is covered least. Only 7 of 11 say anything about what to do when she is not interested, and 3 never mention her comfort or consent at all.

8 of the 11 recommend touch. 1 of those 8 does so without a single word about whether she is comfortable with it. That gap is why this page spends as much space on reading her response and stopping as it does on starting.

How we got these numbers

Pages taken from the top 20 Google results in the United States for the two queries, as reported by Ahrefs on 10 October 2026. Video, forum and social results were excluded, which left 11 pages. We stripped navigation and scripts and searched the remaining text for fixed word patterns, for example "consent", "comfortable", "boundar" for the comfort row. A mention counts even if it is one sentence, so these figures are generous to the guides. The list of pages and the script are kept with our research notes.

"You're the most beautiful woman in here."Generic, about her body, leaves her nothing to say"That's a great jacket. Is there a story behind it?"
"Smile, it might never happen."An instruction, not an opening"This queue is testing everyone. What are you ordering if we get there?"

"Come on, just one drink."Pushing after a no is not flirting"No problem at all. Have a good night."

Compliments on her eyes, her smile, her looks

A remark on appearance from a stranger leaves her nothing to say but thanks, and tells her what you were looking at. If you make one, keep it above the neck, say it once and move on. "You have a great laugh" ages better than anything about her figure. Lips and body are out in a first conversation.

Questions that flirt

A question flirts when it asks for her opinion and not her data. "What do you do?" is a form to fill in. "What's the best part of your week?" is an invitation. Ask one, then offer an answer of your own. Three in a row is an interview. The same holds in messages: see statements versus questions in a text thread.

When she flirts first

Wondering how to flirt back when a woman starts it? Add something. Take the compliment ("Thank you, I'll take that") and return a question or a tease. Deflecting it tells her the answer is no.

The same thing by text

Tone drops out of a message, so the rules shift. We keep that on its own page: what turns a friendly text into a flirty one, with example flirty texts grouped by stage.

A park bench under trees beside a gravel path in morning light
Step 4 · Reading the answer

Did it land? The detection problem

Sending a signal is the easy half. Reading the reply is the hard half, and men get it wrong in two opposite directions.

People miss most flirting

In the Kansas detection study, 52 pairs of single, heterosexual college students who were strangers talked for 10 to 12 minutes. They were more than 80% accurate at knowing when the other person was not flirting. When flirting did happen, 36% of men and 18% of women spotted it. More than 250 outside observers did no better.

Men also err the other way

A speed-meeting study in Psychological Science put 96 men and 103 women, all heterosexual undergraduates, through three-minute conversations. Men overestimated their partners' sexual interest; women underestimated it. Men who rated themselves more attractive overestimated more. Error management theory explains this as a bias shaped by lopsided costs. A smaller speed-dating study (67 participants, 277 dates) found men judged a partner's attraction more accurately when they were not interested in her themselves.

Wanting it bends the reading. Discount your own impression.

Returned, unclear, declined

  • Returned: she adds something. A question back, a tease, a step closer, staying when she could leave.
  • Unclear: pleasant answers, nothing added. Try one more light signal later, then let it rest.
  • Declined: short answers, a turned shoulder, her phone, a mention of her partner. Stop.
If she has to work to get away from it, it was never flirting.

One sign is noise; wait for three

A single smile means little. Our working rule, not a finding: wait for three additions of different kinds in one conversation, say a question back, a tease and a choice to stay, before you treat interest as likely. In a group, whether her friends make room for you is a hint and no more. Blushing, pointed feet and raised eyebrows fill popular lists of signs; no source we opened reports on them, and you cannot act on a blush. You can act on a question.

If she has had too much to drink

Then none of these readings count. Do not flirt. If she seems to be on her own, tell her friends or the staff.

Next-step finder: the setting, her response, your move

Pick where you are and what she did after your first friendly signal.

Honest read

Probably returned. People expect flirting here, and she is adding to it.

What to do

Stay light a few more minutes, then say you have liked talking and ask to carry on another time.

Do not

Do not escalate to touch. Warm is not the same as invited.

Her words outrank any table.

Once you are messaging, the reading problem changes shape. See what a single reply can tell you about flirting back.

A long dinner table set with plates, glasses and unlit candles
Step 5 · Boundaries

Distance and touch: the last thing, never the first

A towel on a bench beside a water fountain in an empty gym

Many guides put a touch on the arm in step two. In our count, 8 of the 11 recommend touch, and 1 of those 8 does so without a single word about whether she is comfortable with it. The evidence points the other way.

What a body-map study found

Researchers asked 1,368 people in Finland, France, Italy, Russia and the United Kingdom to color in where on their bodies each person they knew was allowed to touch them. The permitted area depended on the strength of the emotional bond. You have almost no bond with someone you met ten minutes ago.

Why it weighs more for her

In a Pew Research Center survey of 4,860 US adults in October 2019, 35% of women, against 9% of men, said someone they had dated or been on a date with had touched them in a way that made them uncomfortable.

Flirting physically, without touching

In a first conversation, physical flirting is how you stand. Turned toward her. At arm's length or more. Hands visible, her way out clear. A kiss is not a flirting move at all; it belongs later, once she has made plain she wants one, and asking is fine.

A workable rule

Distance: ordinary conversational range, never between her and the door. If she steps back, stay put.

Touch: none in a first conversation beyond a handshake she offers. Later, follow her lead or ask: "Can I give you a hug goodbye?"

A quiet city street at dusk with wet pavement and lit windows
Step 6 · The exit

Stepping back without making it a scene

A bright supermarket fruit aisle with nobody in it

A good exit is part of knowing how to flirt. Only 7 of the 11 guides in our count say anything about what to do when she is not interested. It takes two sentences.

One sentence, then go

"Good talking to you. Enjoy your evening." Then leave.

What not to add

  • No asking why.
  • No long apology that she then has to soothe.
  • No second try an hour later.

If you misjudged it

"Sorry, I misread that. I'll leave you to it." Then leave. Misreading is ordinary, as the numbers above show. What counts is the next ten seconds.

"Not interested" and "playing hard to get"

A woman who seems not interested is, for your purposes, not interested. "Hard to get" is a story told afterwards. In the moment you cannot tell it from a no, and if you guess wrong she pays for it.

The same rule applies on a phone: our main guide covers when to stop texting her, and the conversation page explains how to let a thread end.

Variation · Low volume

How to subtly flirt, and where subtle stops working

A party table with snacks, cups and string lights

People who search for how to subtly flirt with a girl, or how to flirt without being obvious, usually want deniability: interest that costs nothing if they are wrong. Fair enough. Nearly everyone already flirts this way, which is why so much of it goes unnoticed.

Subtle signals worth using

  • Come back to something she told you last time.
  • Take the free seat near her.
  • Hold eye contact a beat longer when you both laugh.
  • Phone away. Ask questions that follow her answers.

The ceiling on subtlety

Hall's polite flirts leaned back and made more space the more attracted they were. Hard to spot. That is the trouble with learning how to flirt subtly and stopping there: after two or three warm exchanges, be plain. "I've liked talking to you. Coffee sometime?"

Subtle is not sneaky

Hiding the volume is fine. Hiding the intention is not. No favors as leverage, no "accidental" touch, no jealousy games. As for flirting "secretly" or "without her knowing": a signal she cannot detect is not a signal.

Casual and nonchalant are something else

Searches for how to nonchalantly flirt are asking how to care less about the outcome, and that cannot be faked for long. What you can do is make the outcome matter less. Keep the first remark short. Have somewhere else to be. Be the one who leaves first.

Naturally, smoothly, properly: one skill with many names

People search how to flirt naturally, how to flirt smoothly, how to flirt properly, how to flirt effectively and how to flirt effortlessly as if each were a separate technique. They are one skill described five ways: a remark tied to the moment, said at normal volume, with room for her to leave. How to flirt discreetly is the quiet version of the same thing. How to flirt jokingly works when the joke is about the situation and never about her.

Three situations change the answer. A stranger, the "random girl" or "unknown girl" of the search box: one remark, one question, then let her decide. A woman who has just been through a breakup: friendliness only, because she has not asked for more. A woman who has been drinking: do not flirt to move things forward at all. She cannot weigh it properly, and a sober conversation tomorrow costs you nothing.

Variation · Who she is

Strangers, friends, shy women, older women: what changes

An empty museum bench in front of a large abstract painting

Mostly the speed. Working out how to flirt with someone, whoever they are, comes back to the same three tests.

A woman you just met

You have minutes and no history. One signal, one remark, then read. Ask for nothing until she has added something twice.

A friend, or someone you already know

How to flirt with a friend without wrecking the friendship: go slower, then say one plain sentence with the exit included. "If that's not how you see me, nothing changes." Mean it. By message, see texting a friend you are starting to like.

Your crush

A crush you see regularly is the friend case with more nerves. The usual mistake is waiting months for a perfect moment. Three warm exchanges, then ask.

A shy or quiet woman

Shyness and disinterest look alike: short answers, little eye contact. Do not push through it. Ask easier questions, leave longer pauses and watch for small additions over two or three meetings. Goth, nerdy, religious, rich: a "type" changes the topics, never the method.

How to flirt with older women

Drop every remark about age, flattering ones included. Treat her as a peer. If you came here for how to flirt with an older woman, note that no study above found an age-specific technique.

An adult much younger than you

A big age gap, 20 years say, can make a no harder to say. Make declining easier still. Never where you hold authority over her.

Someone with a boyfriend or husband

If she mentions a partner, that is the answer. Stay friendly. Stop flirting. Our advice on how to flirt with a married woman is one word long: don't.

Your girlfriend or wife

Flirting keeps its use once you are together; it only loses the uncertainty. Choice-based compliments, teasing and shared jokes all carry over. For a daily habit, see romantic morning texts in a relationship.

Women flirting with women

The three tests do not depend on who is sending. For anyone searching how to flirt with women as a woman, or how to flirt wlw, the particular snag is that warmth between women is easily filed as friendship, so the plain sentence has to come sooner. The talk studies here used heterosexual pairs.

What we leave out

Negging, push-pull and seven habits that read as pressure

A leash hanging on a dog park gate in the morning

Push-pull is taught as technique on pages that rank for this search, and negging comes from the same pickup tradition. We describe both so you can recognize them, in yourself first.

Negging

A "neg" is a negative comment or backhanded compliment aimed at her. In a University of Kansas survey study of 363 college students and 850 single adults recruited online, Hall and Melanie Canterberry examined three assertive pickup strategies: competition, teasing with negs, and isolation. Hostile sexism was related to both using them and finding them appealing. The release adds that for pickup artists teasing is used to reduce a woman's self-esteem.

The test that separates a tease from a neg: who is the joke on, and would she laugh if a friend had said it?

Push-pull

Warm one minute and cool the next, on purpose, so that she chases the warmth. It fails the "clear enough" test by design, because the confusion is the technique. If your feelings really are mixed, the honest version is saying so.

How to flirt respectfully, in one line

Nothing you do should depend on her not understanding it. That is also the short version of how to flirt without being creepy.

HabitWhat it looks likeDo this instead
Love bombingGrand compliments and future plans in the first ten minutesOne compliment; let interest build at her pace
HoveringStaying beside her after the conversation has endedLeave first; return only if she seeks you out

The favor ledgerKindness as a down payment, resentment when it is not repaidBe kind for free, and state interest separately
Hedging for everMonths of hints, nothing she could answerAfter two or three warm exchanges, one plain sentence

Practice

How to flirt better when you are shy or starting from zero

A library reading table with a green lamp and an open atlas

Flirting is a social skill, and its entry-level version is ordinary friendliness. If your honest position is "I don't know how to flirt", begin with the parts that are not flirting at all.

A four-week ladder for beginners

Ours, not a study's. Each rung is small on purpose.

  • Week 1: eye contact and a nod to people you pass. No words.
  • Week 2: one remark a day to anyone at all, a neighbor or the person behind you in a queue. Small talk, same muscle.
  • Week 3: practice the exit. End three conversations warmly, and first.
  • Week 4: one of the seven moves, once, somewhere flirting is expected.

Confident and direct

Confidence here is not volume. It is being fine with either answer, which is why the exit comes before the opener on the ladder. Once leaving is easy, starting costs less.

First impressions and "be yourself"

Clean clothes, phone in your pocket, an unhurried hello: that is the whole of presentation. "Be yourself" is sound advice with one addition. Be the friendly version, not a character borrowed from a video. The search phrase "how to flirt like a human" has it about right.

If hints are hard for you to read

If you find glances and tone hard to decode, whether or not autism is part of that, lean on words sooner. "I've enjoyed talking to you. Would you like to do this again?" asks her to answer in words too. Nothing on this page requires reading a look.

What "like a pro" gets wrong

The Kansas detection study found no group that was good at this. Participants and more than 250 outside observers alike missed most flirting. So the skill is not flawless reading. It is cheap signals and clean exits.

After it goes well

How to flirt on a date is the same seven moves with the first question already answered. Two later stages have their own pages: the one message to send after a first date, and whether a morning text is welcome after one or two dates.

Questions

Flirting face to face: reader questions

How do you flirt with a girl without being creepy?

Keep every move small, clear and easy to decline. Smile, say one friendly thing about the moment you share, then leave a gap. If she adds something, continue. If she turns away, stop. Creepy nearly always means carrying on after she has stopped taking part, or flirting where she cannot leave. Of the 11 top-ranking guides we checked, 3 never mention her comfort or consent at all.

How to subtly flirt with a girl you already know?

Use attention more than lines. Come back to something she told you, take the seat near her, hold eye contact a moment longer when you both laugh. If she responds warmly two or three times, subtlety has done its job. The next step is a plain, friendly invitation.

How can I tell if she is flirting back?

Look for additions: an unprompted question, a tease in return, a step closer, staying when she could go. Polite replies with nothing added are not flirting. Stay modest: in a University of Kansas study of 52 pairs of students, only 36% of men noticed when their partner was flirting.

What is the difference between flirting and being friendly?

Direction and additions. Friendliness is spread evenly across everyone nearby. Flirting is aimed at one person and keeps adding something: a question, a tease, a reason to stay. The two look alike on purpose, so one warm moment proves nothing. Wait for several.

Is it okay to flirt with a coworker?

Only with great care, and never with someone you manage or who manages you. A colleague cannot simply walk away. One private, low-key invitation to something outside work is the limit. If the answer is not a yes, do not raise it again.

How to flirt with a girl at the gym?

Mostly by not doing it mid-workout. Headphones in or a set under way means do not interrupt. If you see her regularly and she greets you, say one sentence on the way out and leave it there for the day. Never comment on her body or her form.

How to flirt with older women?

The same way as with anyone, minus the comments about age. Treat her as a peer and be direct about enjoying her company. No study on this page found a technique specific to older women, so anyone promising one is guessing.

How to flirt with a shy girl?

Slow down and lower the stakes. Ask easier questions, leave longer pauses and do not read short answers as rejection straight away. Look for small additions over two or three meetings: she stays, she asks one thing back. If none come, take that as her answer.

How to flirt on a first date?

She chose to be there, so the hardest question is answered. Say what you are enjoying, tease gently, listen more than you perform. Leave touch out unless she starts it or you ask. At the end, say plainly if you would like to see her again.

How to flirt with a girl as a girl?

The same three tests apply: small, clear enough, easy to decline. The extra difficulty is that warmth between women is often read as friendship, so say the plain sentence sooner: I would like to take you on a date. The talk studies here used heterosexual pairs, so we have no numbers for women flirting with women.

Can you flirt just for fun, with no romantic aim?

Yes, as long as both people are playing the same game. Light, mutual teasing between friends can be harmless fun. It stops being harmless when one person is hoping and the other knows it. If you notice that gap, be plain about where you stand.

What if I don't know how to flirt at all?

Start with the smallest version: eye contact, a smile and one honest, friendly remark. Flirting is that plus a little more warmth. You do not need lines. You are not unusual either: in a Pew Research Center survey, 46% of daters who struggled to find dates named difficulty approaching people as a reason.

For the message version, go to flirty texts that make her laugh or, on an app, how soon to suggest meeting.
